Stillness, quietness, rest.
In such a busy world, it can be challenging to find stillness, quietness or rest. You might find it hard to read a book and instead find yourself staring at the TV or scrolling on your phone. Actively seeking out stillness can seem like an act of rebellion when it feels like there's always something to do and there are competing demands on our time, but resting helps us to:
be more resilient to stress
be more aware of our inner landscape
unleash our creativity
be less reactive
transform our experiences
be more compassionate to ourselves and others.
Yin yoga can provide you with a welcome sanctuary as its inherent stillness and quietness help you find much-needed rest for your body, mind and spirit, and you don't need a 'full' 60 or 90 minute practice; just a pose or two held for a few minutes can be really beneficial, helping to recalibrate your nervous system and soothe your soul. A little yin yoga practised regularly is usually more effective in the long-run than a longer practice just once a week. So, next time you need some stillness, ease yourself into butterfly, supported fish or legs up the wall (or whatever your go-to poses are!) and give yourself the rest you deserve.
