Feeling unsettled? Try this grounding meditation

Alison Gough

It's not uncommon to feel unsettled or a little all over the place with the change in seasons, particularly if, like me, you find it difficult to let go of the warmth and light of summer as we move into the colder and darker months of autumn.

This seated meditation practice can help to root and ground you if you're feeling affected by change or turbulence in your life by helping you focus on the downward flow of energy, or apana vayu.

First of all, get comfortable. You might like to sit on a meditation cushion, yoga block or blanket, especially if your hips feel tight. You could also sit on a chair if that feels better. Once you've chosen your position, you can decide if you want to close your eyes, and when you feel ready, bring your attention to the base of your spine the part of your spine closest to the earth. Take your time to do this so you can really pay attention to that part of your body. Visualise a downwards pointing triangle at the base of your spine. As you breathe out, see a bolt of lightning moving from the tip of triangle into the earth beneath you. Allow this to stabilize you, ground you, root you in the present. Do this as many times as you would like, as you relax into this grounding visualisation.

Stay here for as long as you need, visualizing yourself rooted in the present moment through this downward flow of energy, only returning when you’re ready.

I hope this helps! Let me know how you get on.
